Bee-keeping initiative at SBH Health and Wellness looks to bring

jhon yudha

Over 150 pounds of Bronx-made honey was collected by beekeepers at the SBH Health and Wellness Center in Tremont, as part of a new program with St. Barnabas Hospital.

Bee-haven is creating locally sourced honey from the Bronx on the rooftop of SBH Health and Wellness Center.

“We’ve already gotten about 150 pounds of honey off of these four beehives,” says Eric Hanan, a beekeeper at Bee-Haven.

The bee-keeping initiative is all a part of the larger program to bring healthier lifestyle and options to the Bronx.

“It’s an innovative project that’s mission is to transform the health of the Bronx. The Bronx usually finishes in 62nd, in last place, when it comes to health outcomes. So, this is really a project where we’re trying to keep people healthy as opposed to just helping them when they get sick,” says Steven Clark, director of marketing/communications at SBH Health System.

jhon yudha

Merritt Driscoll’s position as executive director of Blue Zones is a product of two major life events that shaped her view of health and wellness.

“As I grew up … it just helped me realize the importance that our behaviors have on our health and our longevity,” she said. “If my father hadn’t smoked, he might still be alive today.”

Years later, Driscoll was in a terrible car crash while in college. She broke 11 bones and had to relearn how to walk and feed herself. Recovery was hard, but it made her thankful to be alive.

“From that I became so grateful, I just learned this gratitude for life,” she said. “From that experience, I had this passion to
